A video piece created together with Carmen Baliero and Cecilia López for the work *Cine Accidental*, commissioned by the La Plata Film Festival in June 2010. The piece was composed from fragments of films recovered after remaining hidden for decades: documentaries, short films, and unfinished student projects from the Film Degree program at the National University of La Plata (UNLP), which was closed during the last military dictatorship. The 45-minute piece was projected while the musicians performed Baliero’s composition live, within a structure based on guided improvisation. Carmen Baliero writes: “Making cinema or art in Argentina is difficult and generally accidental. Artistic practice incorporates accident as another element. There are ‘natural’ accidents, which divert an initial project or idea toward other paths —logical outcomes of the creative search. There are also accidents that are more like catastrophes, beyond artistic control. These divert us, annihilate us. The Film Degree program at UNLP, closed in 1976, was ultimately another victim of the coup d’état that took place in March of that year. It was a program that literally disappeared, only reopening in 1993, well into the democratic period and after an intense struggle by the film community, having lost all natural continuity and evolution. Later generations were formed with a silence behind us. The most fortunate among us received fragments of the mutilated inheritance that allowed us to fight against oblivion, but we continued to perceive the absence, the missing piece, the ‘gap’ in cultural evolution. The work consisted of using the film material generously provided by the new program and its authors. Film survivors —expressions of commitment and of the aesthetic and ethical searches of an era— are mixed with testimonies recorded by students of the new program. Perhaps in an attempt to reconstruct the missing link, or simply to coexist for an hour, defying time, with their predecessors.”
